Custom ROMs: Why I Love Android

As of late, I’ve been trying to move away from Apple, but I am sure as hell not going to use stock Android with Google’s trash included. At first, my plan was to use CopperheadOS from the Toronto-based Copperhead [copperheadsec].

Unfortunately, it wasn’t an option for my Pixel 6 PRO when I asked “J” the CEO, who is very active online, what could be done to help port the OS to the Pixel 6 PRO. Well, it would seem one issue is that not enough people are asking for the OS to be ported, along with a lack of hardware.

Now some readers might be asking, Why the hell are you using a custom ROM? Why use copperhead? Well, CopperheadOS has some key features I really enjoy, such as auto-timeout wipe [a feature I’ve not seen on other ROMs], MAC address randomization, and many others.

Along with the added security features, I am annoyed by the extra bloat that is added by Google and many phone manufacturers, so if I can have a simple, secure phone, I am happy. I’d be even more happy if we could also get a physical keyboard, but sadly, we’re still a long way off from having a good privacy-based ROM for the Titan Pocket, so for now I must use a Pixel.

Some might ask, Why not use GrapheneOS, CalyxOS or LineageOS? Well, first off, the reason I am avoiding GrapheneOS is due to some of the actions of the former lead developer of GrapheneOS, which are best shown in a video by Louis Rossmann.

The other reason I would trust CopperheadOS is due to the fact CopperheadOS has features no other ROM has along side a partnership with “The Guardian Project” which I discovered thanks to the partnership and crowdfunding campaign that was held by the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

the Freedom of the Press Foundation was founded by the late Daniel Ellsberg (April 7, 1931–June 16, 2023) and I could do a whole blog post about it, but that’s not what we are here to talk about right now.

I got off track now. Where was I? Oh, right, talking about how we sadly are unable to use CopperheadOS on the Pixel 6 PRO; that is the only major issue I see right now. Should any of my readers want to help or even perhaps help the team see a demand for it on the Pro devices, you can do so by checking out the official site, Reddit, or Telegram. The link I was given was to their main page. https://copperhead.co/android/
